Meet Someone New: Greetings and Introduction

Below are some phrases that are commonly used to convey the greetings. These are used when you meet someone at the first time or to greet someone. Greetings are defined into two, formal and informal.

We use formal greetings when we are in formal situation or talking to someone older or someone who is respected.

  • Good morning
  • Good evening
  • Good night
  • How do you do? (how do you do is not a question and the correct response is to repeat the sentence “how do you do”)
  • How are you? (how are you is a question which is commonly used in formal situation and the polite response is I am fine, thank you. And you?)

Informal greetings are used when we are in informal situation or talking to colleagues/peers.

  • Morning
  • Evening
  • Night
  • Hi or hello

Self Introduction

When you meet someone who does not know you, you need to introduce yourself by giving information about yourself in general. Explanation about self in general begins by introducing name, age, address, and occupation. It depends on whom we speak.

Here are some examples:

Good morning, my name is (your name), I was born in (birth place) on (Month, date year). I live at (your address) I am a (your occupation). (Nice to meet you) or (I’m glad to meet you)
